Aleksandr Gordeev, born in Kazan, Russia, in 1994, currently resides between Hamburg, Germany, and Moscow, Russia.
A self-taught artist working primarily with drawing, Gordeev’s artistic practice is deeply autobiographical. Each series of his works reflects different aspects of his personal and professional life, exploring themes such as the interplay between social and personal structures, their conflicts within the individual, and the pressures exerted on individuality.
In a world where identity is constantly curated, Aleksandr is fascinated by how individuals create and perceive their own authenticity. His work investigates the process of assigning meaning and value to the objects around him and how this shapes his understanding of self, success, and social status. Drawing on a decade of experience as a model, he he analyzes the connections between emotional, cognitive, and intellectual experiences, how these facets manifest in appearance and behavior. This journey has revealed how identity is often reduced to a surface image, sparking his curiosity about the deeper narratives underlying self-presentation.
Gordeev employs visual techniques and clichés from the fashion and modeling industries — posing, fashion editorials, casting tapes, clothing and photo/video and light equipment — to tell stories through his art. He is particularly drawn to the concept of self-aestheticization in contemporary society, treating himself and the objects in his life as readymades. This perspective allows him to explore self-objectification and to view his identity from a third-person perspective.
One of his most significant projects, the calligraphy-inspired Asemic Letters series of 2020, marked a breakthrough in his career. This series garnered wide recognition in the institutional art world, leading to exhibitions and participation in major Russian art fairs. In 2022, Gordeev expanded his practice by organizing and curating poetry readings across Russia, France, Denmark, and Germany, embracing poetry as a complementary artistic medium.
Gordeev has participated in both Russian and international exhibitions, including Galerie Charraudeau in Paris, CICA Museum in Seoul, and сцена/szena gallery in Moscow. He was also a resident of the 11th season of Open Studios at CCA Winzavod.
